My 2017 work, the orb series, is a step in a more minimalist direction. Ultimately, my goal is to create paintings that are simple and bold. At the same time, I find it gratifying to create distinct movement with my line work. The inked lines sharply contrast my striking color choices, to create images that spring off the canvas. These pieces easily stand alone and also generate a playful exchange when grouped together.
I'm also fascinated by combining the chaotic elements of watercolor work with prominent inked lines. It feels like an ongoing conversation, the watercolor segment providing the questions and the ink portions are my answers.
I sketch daily with pencil, ink, and colored pencil and have hundreds of quickly completed renderings of potential paintings. This process is my jump-start to work through composition ideas. Once I land on a composition, that I want to put on canvas, I experiment with colors until I have a combination that excites me and then move forward with the painting.
